Snake Post
We met this little guy on the trail this morning. Anyone have a guess as to what kind of snake he is?
The temperature is steadily risng today and our forested trail walks are done - only road walking for the next hour or so until our friends find us and we call it a day.
We met a great local guy named Randy on the trail yesterday and again today. He likes to hike the trail for exercise, nature, and solitude. Taking a few minutes to visit with him was a fun break.

Get a closer pic next time! :-) Hard to see the markings, but since you didn't jump and run I'd say it's not a Timber or Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake. Or a Bull snake, cause they look like a rattler and you'd jump and run then too. I don't see any long stripes the length of the snake, so I'd say the garter and ribbon snakes are out. Looks too light for a Northern Redbelly or Black Rat(Pilot). Wrong part of the state for the Queen snake. I don't see any ring markings up and down the snake, so Northern Water, Eastern Milk, Western Fox(Pine) or Eastern Hog nose are out. Don't see a light ring around it's neck so Prairie and Northern Ringnecks are out. If it was a medium smooth green with lighter belly it could be a Smooth Green snake. If it was a smoother bluish, greyish, greenish color then it could be a Yellow-bellied/Blue Racer. The only other possibility is the Brown(DeKay's) snake, but they only get up to about 15".
